PHASELIS: Journal of Interdisciplinary Mediterranean Studies
Aim and Scope
PHASELIS: Journal of Interdisciplinary Mediterranean Studies is an interdisciplinary periodical established to serve as a sustainable platform for debate for scientists, researchers and experts examining the ancient city of Phaselis and its territory within the scope of multi/cross disciplinary methods since 2011. As of this moment, the updated and scientific results of the multidisciplinary studies specific to the settlement and area archaeology in the polis and hinterland carried out by a group of more than a dozen are submitted every year, to provide information to researchers who are interested in these topics. All of the scientific articles published in the journal, which are mostly in the field of natural sciences, are published on the condition of being fully focused upon Phaselis and so titled, including a wide range of topics such as flora-fauna, ecology and the natural cycle, fungi and lichens of Phaselis, and fish, chelonian, crustacean and algae types, inhabitants of the area from ancient times to today.
On the other hand, the ancient history based articles form the main scope of the journal. In this regard, the journal includes articles relating to each discipline concerned with the ancient history of the Eastern Mediterranean Basin and Anatolian Geography (such as archaeology, history, epigraphy, numismatics, historical geography etc.). This is because, Phaselis, with a historical geographic location on the land border of Lycia-Pamphylia in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, over the longue durée, was sometimes counted amongst the settlements of Lycia (130-100 B.C.; after 46 B.C.) and sometimes numbered amongst those in the Pamphylian region, while in the Principatus Period (the provincia Lycia in 43 A.D.; provincia Lycia et Pamphylia in 72-73 A.D.) it was included in the named provinces. In this context we aim to publish articles in the journal from each discipline of ancient history relating to the Eastern Mediterranean and Anatolian cultures.
Phaselis, on the maritime trade routes of the Eastern Mediterranean, with its three sheltered harbors and a lagoon convenient for the mooring of trade and cargo vessels, in a strategic location, became a wealthy emporion with a high volume and high value commodities. The city has had an economic, socio-cultural, political and environmental relationship with both the Eastern Mediterranean and Anatolian cultures, from antiquity into the middle ages. The city, which has grown and expanded over the course of time and context and process dependent expansions can be tracked in a chronological perspective, is one of the rare settlements with these above mentioned relationships. In respect to this, the journal’s aim is to create a panoptic view of the history, archaeology and urbanism of Phaselis, which has a strong potential for being a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List with its unique environmental, geographical and cultural significance.
The Phaselis Journal is prepared and published by a group of idealist scholars affiliated to Akdeniz University. No fee is required for the submitted articles. The article submissions and editorial processes are completely free of charge.
However, research into the history of the city, together with a systematic and sustainable area management are most crucial, because these have a direct influence upon the results that can be obtained. The previous lack of these fundamental elements is evident from the results of the study of Phaselis, undertaken by both national and international scientists from 1811 to 2000, albeit with interruptions, different directions and with a variety of purposes. Although these dedicated efforts have been highly productive in terms of their scientific nature, they have been unable to create a detailed and cohesive data set that would allow a more complete and integrated understanding of Phaselis and its hinterland within the context of its historical geography and settlement archeology, as they were unable to maintain any certain level of continuity. In consequence, the Phaselis Field Surveys and Excavations, which we initiated on the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Phaselis, have focused upon the scientific evaluation and inventory of the new data which has and will be obtained through systematic processes in line with the predetermined goals and objectives of the different research groups. In addition to the scientific data obtained within this scope, the prejudices, hypotheses and facts relating to Phaselis will be periodically presented to scholars and intellectuals through, Phaselis: Journal of Interdisciplinary Mediterranean Studies. Within this framework, this specific journal prepared by a group of idealist scholars will offer opportunities to produce knowledge, scientific reviews and a holistic research background, forming a bridge between pre-/post-research and a source for the future research.
