The Bithyns, who lived in tribes, were ruled by the kings of their descendants. They maintained their independence during the Eastern Expedition of Alexander the Great, after his death, they established their own kingdom by making use of the authority gap created during the wars between their commanders. The Battle of Magnesia in 190 B.C. changed the general political situation of Asia Minor and Rome began to intervene in the political events in the region. Within this period, Prusias I, head of the Kingdom of Bithynia, adopted an expansionist policy and fought with the border neighbor Pergamon but lost the war with the intervention of Rome. After the death of Prusias I, his son Prusias II came to the throne and established close ties with Rome through some diplomatic maneuvers of the Romans during the war against the Macedonian King Perseus. He attacked the Pergamon Kingdom, its border neighbors and traditional enemies, by diplomatic means and occupied the territory of Pergamon. Thus, a war started between the two kingdoms. The war was discussed in the Roman Senate and ended with the long mediation of Rome. Prusias II struggle for the throne against his son Nicomedes II, who betrayed him. With the support of the Pergamon Nicomedes II, dethroned and killed Prusias II and came to the throne of Bithynia. In this study, political and diplomatic activities of Prusias II has been analyzed chronologically by employing the works of ancient authors and epigraphic documents.

Keywords: Bithynia, Pergamon, Rome, Senate, Attalus II, Nicomedes II

References

Citation

Direct Link

About Author(s)

M.
