The inscriptions were copied in 2017 thanks to the permission of the museum directorate. Six inscriptions are hitherto unpublished, while the last one (no.7) is an addendum to I.Ephesos 3327. No. 1 is the grave stone of Melitine, the daughter of Ammia and the wife of Lucianus; No. 2 is inscribed for Apollodotos by a certain C. Iulius Barnaios; No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are the funerary stelai of Pythion, Eudemos, Timokrates and Titus Diodoros respectively. The personal names of Morotimos or Morotimes attested in no. 5 and Hypohiethousa in no. 6 seem new. The last inscription (no. 7) was recorded partly missing by the editors of I.Ephesos and is left with no commentary. In this paper, a new edition and a detailed criticus apparatus are provided for this grave stone of Marcus Aurelius Metrodoros and his family. Since it is known that the Pharsalos Era was commonly used in the region, we can date the inscription no. 1 to 86 AD with certainty, while the rest of them are from the Late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Periods.

Keywords: Tire Museum; Greek Funerary Inscriptions; Cayster Valley; Onomastics

References

Citation

Direct Link

About Author(s)

H.
