An early Byzantine church, several houses, cisterns, workshops for agricultural production and three Turkish houses are found in the valley. The settlement that have not been published before have been documented for the first time with our survey. The church on a rocky hill at the west of the settlement has a three-aisled basilica with a triconch sanctuary. The roof of the church was destroyed and the walls have reached at the ground level. The sanctuary has a square in the middle, its ends with an apse in three directions in the north, east and south. The church has three doors on the west and one door on the south. At the west jambs of the north and middle doors are in situ. There is no narthex of the church. The courtyard on the west side of the church has no surrounding walls. There is a cistern in the courtyard of the church. In addition, there are two more cisterns to the east of the church. There is a widespread belief that the triconch structures are monastic churches. As a matter of fact, other similarly planned structures in the region are located in a building group consisting of additional structures in the area surrounded by walls. On the other hand, in the Bademli church there is no surrounding wall and any building near the church. Decorate the church is quite simple. The architectural features of the building and the decorations on a console inside make it possible to date the building to the 6th century. The aim of the article is to make a detailed architectural description of the church and to discuss its place in the region.

Keywords: Lycia, Byzantine Arts and Architecture, Byzantine Ornaments, Bademli Church, Triconch Churches

References

Citation

Direct Link

About Author(s)

B. İşler, “Demre’nin (Myra) Kırsalında Trikonç Planlı Yapıların Mimarisi: Bademli Kilisesi”.
