It is also known that human beings also attributed great holiness and importance to the water they need in order to survive. Especially rivers, besides being a source of drinkable water, have always been at the centre of human life by shaping the geography through which they pass and giving life to this geography. As in line with this , it is seen that authors have often dealt with streams, and rivers in their works. Accordingly, Pseudo-Plutarch is also one of these authors, and his work titled On Rivers deals with rivers, mountains and plants and stones found next to them. His explanations seem to be convincing. This book, which was initially seen as the product of serious research, later lost its credibility because its references and information about the geographies through which some rivers flow were found to be fake. It would be totally misleading and wrong to claim that the work is absolutely full of misinformation about rivers and geographies as it has lots of mythological elements in it. . This study aims to compare and evaluate the ancient accounts told about Marsyas River and Pseudo-Plutarch’s book On Rivers with other ancient sources and find out how his work is accurate.

Keywords: Marsyas, Rivers, Celainai, Aulus, Machaira

References

Citation

Direct Link

About Autho(s)

M.
