While he was there, in his work he narrated the myth of Heracles of Scythian Dynasty. Heracles is a demigod and hero as mentioned in this myth. The Snake Woman (Meixoparthenos/Echidna), who is said to have mated with him, probably represents the Mother Goddess of the Scythian geography and seems similar to Shahmaran. The children born of both, Gelonus, Agathyrsus and Scythes could be historical figures. In most of the modern studies on this myth so far, Heracles has been seen as the character that carries the superior culture of the Hellenes to the geography of Scythia. However, the aspect of him that actually embraced and even served Meixoparthenos and his culture stands out. Here in this myth, first of all, a dynastic fiction that draws its power from divine powers by mating (hieros gamos) the demigod Heracles, who pioneered the establishment of dynasties in the colonies of the Hellenes by his travels, and Meixoparthenos, the mother goddess of the Scythians, is put forward. Thus, a cultural bond is established between the Scythians and the Hellenes, and the territorial claims of the Hellenic colonists in the foreign lands of Scythia are striven to be legitimized. In this context, for the Hellenes, the youngest son Scythes is given a leading role in making this reciprocal bond even stronger.

Keywords: Heracles, Snake Woman, Scythians, Black Sea, Dynasty

References

Citation

Direct Link

About Author(s)

Abiha B. Ç. 2016, “Geleneksel Halk Sanatında Şahmaran Motifleri ve Bu Motiflerin Dili”. Folklor/Edebiyat XXII/88, 99-116.
Altunay E. 2015, Paganizm-1 (Kadim Bilgeliğe Giriş) – Paganizm-2 (Mezopotamya ve Mısır). İstanbul.
Armayor O.
