Abstract: The documentation of Ti. Claudius Aniketos as the earliest imperial freedman procurator of Phrygia in an inscription published recently from the city center of Kotiaon proves the existence of Phrygia as an administrative subdistrict (eparkheia) of the gubernatorial provincia Asia during the reign of Claudius or Nero at the latest. It also suggests that Kotiaion might have been one of the administrative centers of this subdistrict. The records of freedmen procurators of Phrygia (App. 1) and their subalterns, members of familia Caesaris (App. 2) compiled at the end of the article, indicate that the procurators of Phrygia were responsible for all the imperial estates and marble quarries in the region. The author considers that by combining the administration of all the imperial estates and quarries under a single authority, the agricultural products of the estates could be used more effectively in line with the needs of the people working in the quarries. The expansion of emperial estates in the plains of Aslanapa and Altıntaş in the 2nd century AD along with the private properties of the rich negotiators such as Sestullii or that of senators such as Plancii can only be explained by the existence of marble quarries in Altıntaş Plain as large production and consumption centers. The article ends with the evaluation of the ways of expansion of the imperial estates.

Abstract: This article is of three parts. The first part provides a brief account of the past 50 years of publications concerning the figures depicted on the 8-pointed tiles in the tile-work revetments of Seljuk palaces and related structures, in which no meaningful explantion has been offered as to the reason for the use of the four figural types employed in these depictions. The use of these four figural types was to state in the visual language of design that the Seljuk ruler was to be understood as being “The Second Sulaymān,” “The Sulaymān of the Age”. Part II, in brief, addresses the matter of titulature and of its sources, both Caliphal through investiture, and those derived from the Qur’an, and works such as the various Qiṣaṣ al-Anbiyā,’ those literary sources that found expression in the titles of rulers and in the representation of these titles in both script and in visual forms (design) at that time. Part III addresses the matter of the so-called “hybrid” or “mythical creatures” depicted on this tilework, that is, the pictorial representations of some of the members of one of the armies under Sulaymān’s command – the jinn – the references made to them, the record of their appearance in the available sources and the record of their presence in the related literature, and it concludes with examples of the depiction of them on these 13th c. Seljuk tile-work revetments, depictions that differ markedly from their later representation in Ilkhanid, Timurid and Ottoman art.

Abstract: Quintus Tullius Cicero had an elder brother who could inspire and contribute in terms of literature to his development, being Cicero. In addition, Quintus Tullius obtained a very good education becoming a master of Greek literature and philosophy, and he spent most of his life in Rome together with him, with the exception of 7 years when he served in administrative positions outside of Rome. For that reason his writing was naturally expected to be excellent and that he would become a very productive writer. Indeed, it is known from Cicero and from other ancient writers that he was a poet of noteworthy ability. Although his poems were mostly written out of Rome, probably due to the fact he wasn’t concerned that they would be lost, he wrote all his works only as single copies to his brother and he couldn’t rewrite them again when they were lost so as to carry the same intensity of feeling as in the first copy. Further, through developments as well the many time consuming tasks undertaken he didn’t realise his full potential literary output. Although this situation prevents the full understanding of the level of authenticity he reached, the titles they carry indicate these works were adaptations made from Greek to Latin, or were translations. The rare examples of his work, of which some part, or, all of a work, remain to the present day, have often been attributed to other writers, especially to his older brother, in consequence of his area of study, producing works of adaptation or translation. In this study, from the surviving remains of his works and from indications of his lost works, together with the information provided by his brother and by other ancient authors, the literary identity of Quintus Tullius Cicero is examined. To better understand the relationship between his life and his works an account of his life is also included, which provides reasons why his literary output was not greater than it was.

Abstract: The ancient city of Phaselis lies on the seafront between Kemer and Tekirova, southwest of Antalya. It is said that the city’s history dates back to 691 B.C. Geological feature of the city is formed ranging from the Upper Cretaceous magmatic rocks to in the last geological period (Quaternary) to the travertine – travertine breccia (Fanglomera) units. The primary main building material of the ancient city is the travertine breccias. The Jurassic limestones (Tekedağı formation limestones) have been elevated during the neotectonic period and Plio-Quaternary rocks, which were petrified with carbonated waters from the faults, and the travertine breccias (Fanglomera) were formed. Also calcarenites and gabbros are observed in the settlement area of the ancient city. In the ancient city of Phaselis, the surrounding rocks (travertine breccias, travertines, calcarenites, serpentines and gabbros) were firstly used, in later periods marbles, limestone and limra breccia were also used. Travertine breccias and other building materials have been subject to various alteration throughout the history. Alterations in travertine breccias are important because they are the main building element of the city. The main factor in the degradation of the travertine breccias is related to the cement material of the breccias. If the cement is completely carbonated, the blocks are highly resistant. However, the clay material added to the cement is affected by the weather conditions. Considering the future restoration, particular attention will be paid to the cement of the travertine blocks to be produced from the environment.

Öz: Bu çalışmada Antalya Müze Müdürlüğü başkanlığında yürütülen Perge kazılarından 2017 yılında ele geçmiş biri çift dilli, diğerleri ise Hellence olan üç yeni mezar yazıtı tanıtılacaktır. Yazıtlardan ilki Batı Sütunlu Cadde’de, ikincisi Doğu Sütunlu Cadde’deki su kanalında parapette; diğeri ise kilisenin sol kısmında yerde yüksek-zemin taşı şeklinde şipolyen malzeme olarak kullanılmıştır. Gaius oğlu Aiaks’a ait olan ilk mezar taşı bilingual yazıtının harf karakterlerinden ötürü MS III-IV. yüzyıla tarihlendirilmiştir.

Abstract: In this study three funerary inscriptions are introduced, one of which is bilingual and the others are ancient Greek. All were found at the excavations in Perge carried out by the directorate of Antalya Museum in 2017. One of the inscriptions is located at the Western Collanaded Street and the other one is at the Eastern Collanaded Street, used as parapets. The third one is situated at the entrance of the church, on the left side as a part of pavement. The first mentioned inscription has the name Aiax son of Gaius in nominative case and dated to AD III-IVth century based upon its lettering. The second one is erected for Meleagrus and his family and dated to AD IInd century. The last inscription is thought to belong to a woman named Clyte, but also two suggestions are made for the inscription. The inscription is dated to Roman Empire Period.

Abstract: This article focuses on the historical geography of Lycus Valley (Gorduk) in western Asia Minor that lies in between Sardis in its southeast and Pergamon in the northwest. The article aims to discuss the history of urbanization in the area ― especially the small settlement of Apollonis ― from the Achaemenid through the Late Roman periods. Particular attention is given to the Hellenistic period, when the area perpetually changed hands between the Attalid and Seleucid Kingdoms. The reason why the article focuses on the site of Apollonis is not only because this site has so far been little studied, but there is also the need to explore the reasons why such small sites that are not necessarily on the main routes came to be a subject of urbanism policies of the Hellenistic Kingdoms. Further archaeological research in the area would confirm the location of settlements known from inscriptions, and illuminate the strategic importance of the region, especially for the Hellenistic kingdoms.

Abstract: This paper examines the local imprints within which Karian patterns might have been embedded in the centrum and territorium of ancient Tymnos, in modern Bozburun Peninsula. The primary goal of the paper is to explore the way in which the Tymnian community and the associated ethnos, could have expressed themselves via multiple means, in the course of Hellenization and transition process of the Peninsula into the patronage of the Island of Rhodes, as back as the late Classical period. It presents, as a rough estimate, a spatial autopsy and a sketchy vectoral habitat of the epigraphical material (mostly of the IInd century B.C-Ist century A.D) regardless of in situ/ non in situ condition, over a 2.5 km radius of the physical domain, by referring to the published corpus epigraphicum. It then explicates quite a general socio-cultural pattern of the oldest inhabitants, in light of the assimilated deities of the town as reflected through the cultic system of the Karians and ancient Peninsulars and, in a variety of contexts. As the discussions lead and the results display, scant but challenging indicators can suggest a Tymniannes, with a sense of autonomy, preferably achieved through the divine epithets, perhaps the political posts and minorities (if not the elite “Ρόδιοι” or “μέτοικοι”) and imagery of ονόματα in the economic framework. We can, on the contrary, neither articulate the loci to which the Tymnian identity or the respective onomastics are linkable with precision nor a fully showcased indigenousness at a single event.

Abstract: The Harbour Baths, one of the four bathing structures (Harbour Baths, Nero Baths, Central Baths and Small Baths) in the ancient city that were dated to the Roman Period, is located to the northeast of the city. The comple was constructed by placing a series of functionally interrelated units on a straight line according to their order of use. Having been lined up in tandem from west to east, these units, namely frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium, constitute the core section of the building. The building evolved into a comple construction with new annees due to arising requirements in time. In that contet, another unit, the so called Basilica thermarum, was added to the east of this core section (frigidarium, tepidarium, and caldarium). There is a mosaic floor, the boundaries of which haven’t been determined yet, to the east of that large unit. The northern, western, and southern fronts of the building were constrained by roads paved with large limestone blocks. The present study provides detailed information on the plan, construction technique, and units of the building and most importantly, the four phases of construction as observed in the building are to be addressed.
